Over $6.5 million in Federal Funding for Community Health Centers in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi announced today that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has allocated over $6.5 million in federal funding for three community health centers in Puerto Rico pursuant to the 2010 Affordable Care Act, which will enable to these centers to improve care for existing patients and to provide care to over 2,600 new patients.

“Good health is the most important thing in life. This multimillion dollar allocation of funding that we are receiving as part of President Obama’s landmark health care reform legislation will This multimillion dollar assignment that we are receiving as part of President Obama’s Health Reform will support renovation and construction projects, will improve the ability of these community health centers to care for patients, and will create jobs,” said Pierluisi.

The $6.5 million destined for Puerto Rico will be divided between the Gurabo Community Health Center, Inc., which will receive $4.9 million; the Dr. Julio Palmieri Ferri de Arroyo Centro de Salud Familiar in Arroyo, which will receive $1.1 million; and the Lares Community Health Center, which will receive $500,000.

The Resident Commissioner reiterated his commitment to provide guidance to any community health centers and other potential grantees in Puerto Rico to take advantage of relevant federal funding opportunities.

“President Obama’s health care law is making community health centers in Puerto Rico stronger,” said Secretary Sebelius. “For many Americans, community health centers are the major source of care that ranges from prevention to treatment of chronic diseases. This investment will expand our ability to provide high-quality care to millions of people while supporting good paying jobs in communities across the country.”
